click to enlarge This is a photo of the 6mm foam I use for the bases of my ornaments/eggs. It's tuff enough to handle the hot glue and strong enough to support the mini figurines that I love to use.
Sometimes I will use thin Styrofoam board as the base.
I mark the disk F for front, B for back, and cut out the disk with a pair of scissors.

click to enlarge This is how the base should look after the trimming. I will press the base down (area shown with arrows) to get it even with the lowest point of the porcelain and then hot glue it in place.
